George Washington “Carter” Shields lived on this homestead from around 1910 to 1920, although the cabin dates from the 1830s. Carter Shields place is one of the stops along the Cades Cove loop road in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Carter Shields was a Civil War veteran, crippled at the Battle of Shiloh on April 1862 in Southwestern Tennessee.
In the springtime, the dogwood trees and split rail fence create many opportunities for memorable Smoky Mountains photos here. The Shields cabin is also very attractive to deer … perhaps a salt lick under the porch … and you often find an extra bonus for your photos.
This scene, along with the dogwoods and fence, are in one of my Featured Photos, called Dogwood Home.
Please stop in and visit me to see the complete display of Smoky Mountains Photos at the William Britten Gallery in Gatlinburg, TN. All of my landscape images offered both matted and framed, as well as a selection of magnets, mugs, and notecards. The Gallery is located along the historic Arts and Crafts Loop on Glades Rd. in Gatlinburg.
My family line goes back to the ten brothers that came to Cades Cove. This has been a place that my family have visited over and over again and never tire of it. I love the Smokies, but to me,the biggest draw is going through the Cove. I love going through the tombstones and finding relatives from way back. I cannot even begin to say how many times I have been through it. Not only is it something from family, but it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been!!! The scenery is something that is better than what you could ever pay for!! My father did much research before he died, but I am still interested in people out there that might have come from this line as well.

Thanks for your comments and sharing your family history.

Robert Shields, born 1740′ is my 5th great grandfather. My 1st great grandmother was Etta Shields. I just recently started researching family history and the Shields link to the Pigeon Forge area is fascinating!
I am from his son Benjamin’s line. Benjamin married Mary Veatch. Mary’s direct blood line goes back to King Robert The Bruce! So, the paring of Mary and Benjamin provides some very interesting lineage.
Have you done much research and do you know if there are any family reunions?
I have asked permission to use one of the pictures in a Christmas Card.
As you can see this is part of my husbands heritage.
I would appreciate your giving the permission.
I intend to paint a picture in watercolors.
Sincerely,
Marianne

Yes, that would be fine to use my photo as a start for a painting.
thanks,

Margaret Ann Shields is my Fifth Generation Great Great Grandmother. Margaret was the daughter of John Shields and Mary Ann Shook. She married William Henry Shook. She was born in 1847 in McMinn Co., Tn. I had to wonderful lucky cousins that made the trail of the ancestors and the cabin got into the family book along with the Primitive Baptist Church that has a lot of Shields family buried there. I am in the Nashville area but not originally from TN but always felt like it was home. I wonder why.
My grandfather, Robert Silas Shields, was born in the Carter Shields’ cabin. I have just begun to research my history as well.

Jan
