The weather around the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is characterized by humid days and cool nights — perfect conditions for early morning fog. Morning mist is ephemeral, chased by the sun like dew on blades of grass, like smoke rising from burning incense.

Earlier this week, driving along the Foothills Parkway near Cosby, I looked to the right and saw the scene above. The mute silence of the mountains, with mist twining through the valleys, engulfing whole houses as in the picture below. I pulled off in the overlook and soaked up the moment.

The long image above was was created with several hand-held shots. Take the picture, move the camera a bit to the right, take another picture, move to the right … then stitch the images together to create a single panorama.
