Smoky Mountain Monet is a favorite year after year in my gallery and at art fairs. This picture is an example of how I like to use an intimate landscape to create a mood or reflect an emotion. This picture was taken in the Tremont section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It’s interpretation of autumn is very much Impressionism in style.

The actual scene in the woods was quite ordinary … just a small pool, barely more than a puddle.  But it caught my attention in the way that it was reflecting the fall canopy overhead, while at the same time having some leaves floating on the surface of the pool. I’m not sure if I consciously thought of it as “Monet-like” at the time, but I set up the camera and tripod and took over a dozen images using different exposure times. I knew that the gentle movement of the water would create a neat effect, but wasn’t sure how much movement would be the most pleasing.  The alternate picture below shows how a small change in the exposure time makes a big difference in the result.

These images are from a digital camera (I think the original Canon 1ds), and when I worked on the dozen or so in Photoshop, the one above immediately was my favorite because of it’s obvious Monet-like qualities. I also liked the one below, which makes me think more of a stained glass effect.  Often a customer will buy both images as a set. Details of sizes and pricing can be found on the How to Buy page. Peace in Wild Places captures the mood of a foggy Smoky Mtns trail, miles away from cares and worries. This photo was taken along the Appalachian Trail at an altitude above 6000 feet near Clingmans Dome. To me the image spoke to the enduring peace that can be found in remote natural areas.  I especially love to take hikes at the higher elevations in the Smokies where it feels so remote and removed from the problems and craziness of today’s world.

Cades Cove Morning is a fairly new addition to the William Britten Gallery, taken from Hyatt Lane in the Cades Cove section of the Smoky Mountains. This photo was taken just after 7:00, when the morning was bathed in a golden, syrupy light, and the mist still lingering on the valley floor.

This photo draws the viewer into the scene with a series of triangles along the lower part. Low-angled sunlight creates dramatic shadows and contrast. The mist scooting along the valley floor is just icing on the cake! As often happens with a successful photo, conditions were perfect on this day. I went back just a few days later to see if I could improve on the photo, but the Park Service had trimmed the grass around the fence posts! And there was no mist on the second day.

Cades Cove Morning is offered in all sizes. Details of sizes and pricing can be found on at the bottom of the How to Buy page.

Greenbrier Autumn Watercolor is another new one from the 2010 fall season. It’s a triptych, or three vertical panels that create a horizontal scene. I’ve been wanting to do a triptych, and this autumn panoramic was the perfect opportunity.

The scene is in the Greenbrier section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It was taken from the footbridge at the start of the Ramsay Cascades Trail. An all-day soaking rain the day before had the creeks swollen and wild. Click on the image above to see a larger version.

This piece is currently in my Gallery on three 3/4 inch thick frameless boards. Each board is 12 inches wide by 18 inches tall.  The three panels making the scene therefore measure 18×36″  Each panel could also be printed at a 16×24″ size, creating a full size of 24×48 inches.

Color Cascade is a new fall image for 2010. It was taken from one of the bridges spanning the Ramsay Prong of the Little Pigeon River in the Greenbrier section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This picture was taken from exactly the same spot as the winter scene below.

This image was taken after an all-day rain in October of 2010. Color Cascade is available in all sizes. Details of sizes and pricing can be found on at the bottom of the Gatlinburg Gallery page.
